Sleep deprivation
Sleep deprivation is caused by insufficient sleep and can cause severe consequences both to the body and mind. It is divided into two types, chronic and acute.
Sleep is an essential process for the body, in it; regeneration of tissue and healing of scars and injuries happen, as well as a kind of reboot, after which the mind – all brain functions – star fresh and at their best.
Sleep deprivation leads to the whole malfunctioning of the body and it may result in:
· Depression
· Hallucinations
· Headaches
· Obesity
· Ache in some muscles
· Confusion
· Irritability
· Memory loss
· Increased blood pressure
· Nystagmus
· Eye bags
· Malaise
· Hand tremors
· Increased risk of diabetes
...and others.
Sleep deprivation is not a disease, but a condition, and in many cases this condition is triggered not by a disease, but instead, by a bad habit. Having a "when to go to sleep schedule" might sound ludicrous – especially if you are young – but if you change your biological clock and standardise it by force of habit, then you will sleep better and you will never wake up again with the most horrible hangover or malaise without having had any alcoholic drinks the night before – this is actually caused by the disruption of sleep in the fourth stage -.
The advantages of doing things correctly are, believe it or not, amazing. Changing bad habits like drinking coffee or having supper late at night, having not enough water during the daytime, waking up to go eat something or even using your bedroom as a place to study or eat every day, will result in a great improvement in your life. You will be more awake and heedful; your mental and physical capacities will be enhanced; you senses will sharpen and you will feel less depressed and, consequently, happier.
Finally, every individual person is different, however, the total time a person should be sleeping is around seven hours and – this is important – the best time to wake up is during REM sleep. Sleeping happens in stages so you may actually measure more or less when you will be having a REM sleep stage.
